Know about Merchant Navy

The Merchant Navy mainly deals with transporting cargo and occasionally, passengers, by sea. It has different fleets composed of passenger vessels, cargo liners, tankers, Bulk carriers, Car carrier, containers as well as the other special types of vessels. Merchant Navy is the backbone of international trade, carrying cargo across the globe for Import & Export business.

The Merchant navy career options mainly includes the following category :
1. Navigating officers (Deck side officers)
2. Marine engineering Officers (Engine side officers)
3. Crew members (To assist the officers)
4. Specialized officers (Electrical officer, Radio officers)

Shipping companies offer these positions on contracts for a period of 6 to 9 months. After finishing the contract period, the officers can enjoy leave & whenever they want to join back, the company will absorb them immediately. Presently the demand for Marine Engineers & Deck officers are high worldwide. The shipping companies are facing great shortage for the Deck & Engine officers. Course

General Purpose Rating

ELIGIBILITY

10th pass or above from recognised board. 
Medically Fit (Eye vision + or - 2.5 allowed). No colour blindness.  Age 17.5-25 years


COURSE OUTLINE

Maritime English and General Ship knowledge, navigation, cargo handling and stowage, marine engineering knowledge & practice , electrical electronic & control engineering, controlling the operation of ship & care for persons on board.


CERTIFICATES PROVIDED

Student after successfully accomplishing the training program will be awarded with the course certificate, by the academy approved by Director General of Shipping, Ministry of Surface and Transport Govt. of India. In inclusion to the above candidate will also receive INDOS and foreign CDC (Continuous Discharge Certificate).

CAREER PROSPECTS

Candidate after successfully finishing the pre sea training course has to undergo On-Board training or sail for minimum period of 18 months. The eligible candidate can target to become Master mariner on board after fulfilling required sea time and clearing various exams.

Pre Sea Training - Deck Rating

OVERVIEW

The training program is designed for the candidates who are desirous of perusing career in Deck category in merchant shipping and ought to become Deck officers or Navigation officers.


ELIGIBILITY

12th pass (Art/ Commerce/ Science) from recognised board.  English should have been one of the subjects Medically fit (+ or - 2.5 eye vision is acceptable) without colour blindness 
Age 17.5 to 25 years


COURSE OUTLINE

Introduction to shipping industry, Familiarization with deck department of the ship, Deck safety, Navigation, Metrology, Watch keeping duties, Search & Rescue operations, Flag Signals & codes, Life saving appliances, Survival at Sea, Swimming, Personality development, English & Computer etc.


CERTIFICATES PROVIDED

Student after successfully accomplishing the training program will be awarded with the course certificate, by the academy approved by Director General of Shipping, Ministry of Surface and Transport Govt. of India. In inclusion to the above candidate will also receive INDOS and foreign CDC (Continuous Discharge Certificate)


CAREER

Candidate after successfully finishing the pre sea training course has to sail for minimum period of 18 months in order to appertain for officer COC assessments/ exams.


Pre Sea Training - Engine Rating

OVERVIEW

The training program is designed for the candidates who are desirous of perusing career in Engine category in merchant shipping and ought to become Marine Engineer or Engine officers.


ELIGIBILITY

12th pass (PCM) from recognised board 
English must have been one of the subjects 
Medically fit (eye vision + or - 2.5 allowed) with no colour blindness 
Age 17.5- 25 years


COURSE OUTLINE

Introduction to shipping industry, Familiarization with Engine department of the ship, Types of Engine, Types of pumps, Fuel system, Maintenance & operation of Machineries, Rebuilding an engine, Life saving appliances, Survival at Sea, Swimming, Personality development, English & Computer etc.


CERTIFICATES PROVIDED

Student after successfully accomplishing the training program will be awarded with the course certificate, by the academy approved by Director General of Shipping, Ministry of Surface and Transport Govt. of India. In inclusion to the above candidate will also receive INDOS and foreign CDC (Continuous Discharge Certificate)


CAREER PROSPECTS

Candidate after successfully finishing the pre sea training course has to sail for minimum period of 12 months in order to appertain for Engineer COC assessments/ exams.

General Steward

ELIGIBILITY

8th pass/above or any equivalent from recognized board, Medically fit, Eye glasses permitted, No color blindness, Good communication skills Age: 17.5 - 25 years

COURSE OUTLINE

Introduction to shipping industry , Ship familiarization, Front office operations and management, F&B Services, Customer care operations, Guest handling procedures, Dining service method & procedures, Housekeeping organization, Life saving appliances, Survival at Sea, Swimming, Personality development, English & Computer etc.


CERTIFICATES PROVIDED

After successful completion of the training, the course certificate will be issued by the academy approved by Director General of Shipping, Ministry of surface and Transport govt. of India. In addition to that candidate will be awarded with INDOS & Foreign CDC (Continuous Discharge Certificate). In addition to that candidate may take Experience certificate from Hotel/ Hospitality Industry.


CAREER PROSPECTS

The Candidate After completions of pre-sea training Courses has to Sail or undergo On-board training. A competent person can rise to the level of Catering officer or purser on board a merchant ship after required sea time and passing various exams.

Seaman Technician

ELIGIBILITY

10th pass or above from recognised board , ITI (Welder/ Fitter/ Mechanical), Medically Fit (Eye vision + or - 2.5 allowed)
No colour blindness , Age 17.5-25 years

Introduction to shipping industry, Deck & Engine department of the ship, Maintenance & Operation of ship machineries, Welding Techniques, Introduction to Welding & Gas cutting, Shielded Metal Arc Welding, Navigation, Life saving appliances, Survival at Sea, Swimming, Personality development, English & Computer etc.

Student after successfully accomplishing the training program will be awarded with the course certificate, by the academy approved by Director General of Shipping, Ministry of Surface and Transport Govt. of India. In inclusion to the above candidate will also receive INDOS and foreign CDC (Continuous Discharge Certificate)

Saloon Rating

ELIGIBILITY

Merchant Navy offers Saloon Ratings course for 10+2 pass students. So, it is ideally suited if one has made up his mind early in life that this is the career path one is going to follow. Saloon Rating is a Six months Pre-Sea Training Program approved by the Directorate General of Shipping, Ministry of Shipping, Government of India. The training comprises of theoretical and Practical study of Food Production, Food & Beverage Service, House-keeping and Maritime Familiarization which gives the successful trainees an opportunity to join the merchant shipping in the Hospitality Department.


Profile of this job in Merchant Navy.

As a Catering/Saloon rating you'll perform a variety of jobs as well as being cook or cook/steward - such as forming part of emergency response teams involved in fire fighting, security and passenger controller rescue duties.


Educational qualifications:

Pass with aggregate 40% marks in 12th Standard (Commerce, Arts or Science) from a recognized Board and with minimum 40% marks in English language in 10th or 12th.


Eyesight/Vision:

Use of corrective lenses for eyesight is permitted but the maximum permissible limits, at entry, are 6/12 in each eye or 6/9 in better eye and 6/18 in other eye for distant unaided vision. Color blindness is not permitted.

Merchant Navy

The Merchant Navy is the common term for the commercial shipping industry. Roles within the Merchant Navy vary depending on a number of factors, including size and type of vessel. The range of vessels includes passenger ferries, container ships, tankers, small tugs, and cruise ship. Some vessels have a large number of officers and ratings, whilst others have a very small number of officers and ratings. This affects the breadth of responsibilities and seniority of those on board.
